Western Medical Acupuncture

Western Medical Acupuncture is the use of evidence based acupuncture, in other words, we only use the acupuncture that has scientific evidence to back up its effectiveness. The evidence suggests that acupuncture needs to be combined with other Physiotherapy treatment techniques to become a very effect treatment for neuromusculoskeletal problems. For example acupuncture can be used in combination with massage, manipulation, rehabilitative exercises and much more for an optimum outcome.

Acupuncture is by definition 'the insertion of a needle for physiological effect'. This means that when a needle is inserted it stimulates changes in your body, such as endorphin release for analgesic (pain) relief, and increased blood flow to stimulate the healing process.

At Elizabeth Edwards Physiotherapy sterile one use needles are inserted in to either myofascial trigger points or acupuncture points. Acupuncture points are certain areas along a meridian (pathways in the body) that correlate with nerve conduction, blood supply and fascial trains. These acupuncture points stimulate your parasympathetic nervous system which in turn gives the body a beneficial physiological change.

Acupuncture is not meant to hurt. DeQi is created on each needle after insertion which will involve a gentle twist or flick of the needle until a sensation is felt. DeQi is the nervous system recognising a sensation. In traditional Chinese medicine DeQi is known as increased energy flow.

At Elizabeth Edwards Physiotherapy you are screened for any contraindications for the use of acupuncture as part of your treatment plan, and if it is safe to use on you it really is a very effective treatment technique not only for your neuromuscular problem but it helps with sleep, decreases stress and promotes relaxation too!
